The Detroit Institute for Creative Writers has been established to meet the needs of creative writers in Metropolitan Detroit for guidance in the process of publishing their writing, from manuscript development to editing to finding an appropriate agent. Its goal is to help writers develop their work and place it in the ‘right’ hands.

The Institute emphasizes shaping and preparing a manuscript for publication, querying and pitching as a process. This includes recognizing when it is ready — or not ready—determining what is needed in terms of editing and rewriting, what works well for the manuscript, what does not work, developing the book proposal and synopsis and the all-important selling ‘pitch’.

The Institute’s activities consist of a series of meetings that begin with intensive work on a draft manuscript and end, for the most promising manuscripts, with a trip to a conference in New York City including an opportunity to meet one-on-one with several literary agents.

The Institute initiated its activities in 2003 and it is currently open to students that are seeking guidance in the process of publication.
