New Cooperative Press Calypso Editions publishes Seattle Author Elizabeth Myhr

September 30, 2011 – Calypso Editions is pleased to announce the publication of Seattle-based author Elizabeth Myhr’s debut collection the vanishings & other poems. The author will read and discuss her work at a book launch party in Seattle on October 15, 2011. A national reading schedule will begin in the spring of 2012.

“Nearly a Zen koanthis poet uses language to explore the limitations of language. With exquisite delicacy, her poems echo “the left hand of thunder” during concerts by “incomparable orchestras of rain.” Revived, we visit ‘a country // where the ancient loneliness restores itself.’ By turns passionate, curious, vivid, and mysterious, these poems shine like ‘the tiger of starlight / no bars no cages.’” – Peggy Shumaker, Alaska Poet Laureate

In her debut book of poetry, Myhr illuminates the concept of intellectual exile, of the limitations that language places on the body and on image, and the relationship between 20th century war and poetry. Her unique voice and her unusual treatment of English grammar and syntax make this a daring and ambitious book.

Elizabeth Myhr is a Seattle native. She grew up playing jazz piano and attended Garfield High School where she was a member of Garfield’s acclaimed jazz band. She completed her undergraduate degree at The Evergreen State College with a B.A. in English, and began writing poetry in her twenties. She has published in many journals and literary reviews including Alaska Quarterly Review, Knock Magazine, LBJ and Poetry International. She received her MFA in poetry from Seattle Pacific University in 2009 and went on to become a founding member of Calypso Editions. She currently works as an editor for several print and online publishing companies and journals, including Marick Press, Web Del Sol Review of Books, and Raven Chronicles. Myhr works as a freelance product development manager and managing editor and lives in Seattle with her family.
